As the ancient Iapetus Ocean closed, continents collided and sedimentary rocks were folded by enormous forces, creating the Caledonian mountains.
The ancient metamorphic rocks of the Isle of Iona are part of the Lewisian Gneiss Complex,amongst the oldest rocks of Western Europe.
