City of Fire: the volcanic history of Edinburgh

Within the city of Edinburgh, there is dramatic evidence of two very different episodes of volcanic activity that have created the hard igneous rock of the city’s hills. The founder of geology, James Hutton, proposed that today’s natural processes were clues to past activity; with this perspective, we will walk in Hutton’s footsteps and survey Edinburgh’s geology, using accounts of recent volcanic activity to imagine what this area might have looked like in the past.
