Journey along the Moine Thrust

Event Date:

28th January 2021

Event Time:

7:00 pm

The Moine Thrust runs through the Western Highlands of Scotland, from near Durness to Skye, and is one of Scotland’s great geological divisions. To the west lies a mix of rock types with wonderful names and a long geological history: amongst them are the Lewisian gneiss, Torridonian sandstone, Pipe Rock and Fucoid beds. To the east, the great slab of Moine metamorphic rocks, baked in an entirely different oven and shoved westwards at a late stage in the Caledonian Orogeny. We’ll explore these rocks and the junction between them, and the story of the geo-pioneers who first understood the magnitude of the tectonic events of this area.
