One of East Lothian’s most impressive chunks of rock, Traprain Law is a laccolith, a mushroom-shaped intrusion that deformed layers of sedimentary rock as magma squeezed close to the surface.

THE ROCKS: This walk gives a good overview of the East Lothian volcanic field, allowing us to see how the land is shaped by flat lava flows interrupted by occasional intrusions and volcanic vents. We can compare the texture and resistance to erosion of igneous rocks formed in different environments.

THE WALK: A short walk on quiet roads, tracks and paths from Hailes Castle on the banks of the River Tyne to the summit of Traprain Law, and returning to Hailes Castle. I have classified this as an Easy Walk. On paths, although there are uneven surfaces and steps and it may be rough, wet or slippery underfoot. It may be wet, windy or cold. Come equipped with strong footwear and waterproof clothing.

MEETING POINT & ROUTE: At the roadside car park for Hailes Castle. From the old A1 at East Linton follow the signs for Hailes Castle, taking the minor road leading south west along the bank of the River Tyne to the castle. This walk is accessible by public transport to East Linton with a 2.5 km walk along the River Tyne.
