THE ROCKS: Craiglockhart Hills are formed from the eroded remains of a basaltic volcano that erupted around 350 million years ago. The lava flows that form the hill display some fine columnar jointing in places, and there are traces of volcanic ash from explosive eruptions. The hills sit at the junction of two contrasting sets of sedimentary rocks that are important components of the varied geology of central Scotland.

THE WALK: A circular walk from the Water of Leith to the summit of Wester Craiglockhart Hill, exploring the contrasting sides of the hill and returning by Craiglockhart Pond and the Union Canal. Distance 6km. This is classified as an Easy Walk, although the causeway can be slippery in places. It may be wet, windy or cold. Come equipped with strong footwear and waterproof clothing.
